Simple addition word problems

How we do addition word problems
It is very important that our kiddos “show what they know”. They are expected to be able to show their thinking by good old fashioned “showing their work”. Of course right now a bunch of our work is on the more simple side which offers a great chance to learn “how” to show thinking (which later on becomes defending your answers). So ready, set, here we go!

Step 1 is to read the problem carefully and circle the important  information and underline the clue word to help you know what if you are going to add or subtract.

Step 2 is to draw a picture or use manipulatives to represent the word problem. (We use dots to keep this a math lesson instead of art class LoL) If it is addition, we draw a circle to represent putting it together.

Step 3 is to write a number sentence (equation) to show the problem. Numerical representation is a bit tricky sometimes! We also say “makes” instead of equals because it will help later on with understanding our standards.

Step 4 would be to write the final answer in the space provided. (there is not a space on the 4 question sheet but there is one on the other word problem)

There is SO much happening on the Bearcat campus!

We have back to school night on Tuesday 6:00- 7:15. There will be 2 sessions with a 15 minute break between for parents with multiple Bearcats to get from one classroom to the other.

Back to School Night is always fun for me because I get to meet the families of the amazing students of room 306. During Back to school night I will be sharing first grade expectations, classroom management (Dojo & Love and Logic), homework and other super exciting topics! I will also answer questions that you may have.

Another exciting thing on the Bearcat campus is the ALL-AMERICAN RuN coming up soon! Kiddos are busy gathering pledges and their red, white, and blue outfits so we can have the most successful (and fun) jog-a-thon in Bearcat history!!!

We also have our First Grade Field Trip to the Farm! We will be traveling to the farm at Clovis East High School to learn about how we grow our food and about farm animals on Thursday, Sept. 24th. Keep an eye out for permission slips and chaperon information.

First Newsletter

Here is our first official newsletter for the year!

The front (first page) has important classroom information and is our means of communication regarding your child’s choices made in class the previous week.  Please note the work complete, Dojo positive points, and work habits sections are blank because everyone had a chance to practice my expectations last week.

The back (second page) has “Homework Corral” that lists or gives information about the week’s homework. It will list the sight words and dictation sentence. It will also tell expectations for writing structures.

Newsletters will go home on Monday (or the first day of the week) with homework in our official homework folder. Signed newsletters along with completed homework should be returned on Friday (or the last day of the week) in the homework folder.

Ready, Set, Go!

I saw a sign that said, "Summer should get a speeding ticket for going by so fast!". I had to giggle to myself for 2 reasons. Yes, I can’t believe summer break is over! But also, I am looking forward to the new school year starting up. Seeing the faces of my “new crop” on that first day is always exciting!

SOyes I am ready! The room is set and let’s go!
